2020 Award of Excellence: Shawn Vincelette
Shawn Vincelette, founder of Bugaroo Studios, has had a lifelong relationship with the world of art. His journey began in 1988; upon receiving a total of five Scholastic Art Awards at the Annual Regional High School Art Show held at the Mitchell Museum in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. One of these awards was the “Hallmark Award for Artistic Excellence”; the “Best in Show” award for the entire region. The piece which was chosen for the Hallmark Award is a linoleum block print of the Willis Allen Home.
Based on the recognition during the Mitchell Museum event Shawn was awarded the Frances McLarken scholarship to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design where he studied illustration, painting, and video production.
While a student at SCAD, Shawn opened "Nuovo" ("new" in Italian). The art gallery featured original works of art and mass produced items created and designed by fellow students all exhibited in a 19th century row house in historic Savannah, GA.
In 1990, Shawn completed a study abroad fellowship through the Savannah College of Art and Design; a three month program that spanned seven cities; Zurich, Milan, Florence, Pisa, Rome, Padua and Venice. The off campus program focused on art and architectural history, as well as on location studio classes. During his time in Florence Shawn also organized an off campus group show featuring 15 artists and approximately 75 pieces ranging from pastels and painting to mixed media and sculpture.
Since graduating from SCAD, Shawn has continued to work in the art domain; both independently as well as for major corporations. He founded the Vincelette Collection Art Gallery in the Virginia Highlands area of Atlanta, GA (1994); as well as Enunciate Marketing and Design (2001) and Mini Mobile Media (2002). Shawn also served as Creative Coordinator of Macy’s South.
In 2006, Shawn founded Bugaroo Studios where he has independently created, produced, marketed and sold his creations through numerous outlets. The artist's current creative outlet produces original prints and paintings as well as custom commissioned designs.
In 2012, Shawn exhibited the first twelve drawings in the Marion Landmarks Series of illustrations based on his hometown of Marion, Illinois.
That first exhibit at the Pavilion in Marion introduced many to a series that has grown to include more than three hundred pieces of artwork. Each one capturing a moment in time from Marion's past.
September 2020 Shawn collaborated with the Marion Cultural and Civic Center to kick off their new initiative designating historic downtown Marion as the "mural district." The mural is located in Paradise alley and features the original Orpheum theater and the SW corner of the town square as it appeared in the distant past.
With two limited edition books featuring images from the Marion Landmarks Series sold out, plans are being made to introduce volume three in the Spring of 2021.

I owe everything I am today to Marion. While I spent many years of my art career exploring the world for inspiration, my biggest inspiration turned out to be the little town I know best. I am thankful every day I can do what I enjoy most in this life and to have others enjoy my scribbles. This is such a wonderful gift, and this recognition confirms to me that focusing my artistic talents on our little Southern Illinois town is exactly what I am supposed to be doing.
