The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Of course prevention and early detection are keys to winning the battle against any cancer. Heartland Regional is pleased to be the first hospital in the region to offer hereditary risk assessment and testing to help determine if patients are at elevated risk of developing cancer in the following sites:
At The Center for Breast Health patients complete a personal and family history to determine if they are at higher than average risk for developing cancer. If their history indicates that they may be at risk, the radiologist, and/or technologist, may recommend that they make a Risk Assessment appointment.
Each Risk Assessment appointment is led by a specially trained staff member who…
- Uses the patient’s hereditary history to clarify their particular risk.
- Provides patient education including:
- a description of hereditary cancer,
- the value of screening and early detection
- … and other relevant information.
- In elevated risk cases, patients may now also consider Genetic Testing at Heartland Regional.
Genetic Testing, performed at our center, is highly sophisticated but simple and non-invasive. DNA from a patient’s cells is analyzed to identify the presence of chromosomal abnormalities. To ensure a collaborative, continuity of care all high-risk patient information will be forwarded to their family doctor’s office for further medical management.
At The Center for Breast Health our goal is to partner with the family doctor’s team to empower, educate and support to their patients. In addition to Risk Assessment & Genetic Testing we have recently added:
- 3-D digital mammography
- breast ultrasound
- stereotactic biopsy
- and bone densitometry
